Info on Model 141 Grade E

Came across this old post while looking for any info on a new found gun. I recently bought a 141 that is marked E . The engraving looks factory to me it has a Whitetail buck leaping on left side panel and a bear on right side panel. I will include pictures of the gun. It is marked underneath the forward part of the receiver with ( Mod 141-E ) Serial number appears to be 12385 in first two pictures but I think the 8 could be a 9 as you will see in third picture showing serial number on triggers tang which reads 12395 See pictures. I don't see anywhere where engraver signed his work but I have read early on that they didn't sign there work. Here are pictures of top and bottom of the receiver.

Now the rest of the story !! 32 Rem Barrel has no engraving ahead of receiver like on all D,E and F grades I have seen. There is no barrel codes on gun. The fore end is a standard 141 fore end with small grooves and not fancy wood. The butt stock I believe is a later replacement. No checkering and not fancy wood.

I am sure something has gone on with the gun but no idea what or why ??? Please anyone with any thoughts chime in and give me your thoughts. Do any of you agree with me that receiver is 100 % Remington ?? Or has someone messed with that to ???

Any thoughts would be much appreciated . It seems the 141-E grade is a rare bird according to the beginning of this thread which was started in 2007.

My 141 E was signed by Carl Ennis with his characteristic "E" in the engraving. It's too bad that your gun is missing its E grade stock and forend.

Definitely an interesting piece. But I'm thinking the chance of that being factory engraving is pretty close to zero. Would be very surprised to learn otherwise. But I have been wrong before.

Here are pictures of the rest of the gun. These parts don't even slightly resemble a high grade gun !!! No serial number stamped on triggers lug or tang. small mark on underside of barrel. A dot before .32 rem ?? Stock is plain wood with wrong butt plate. Forend wood a little curl to it but not high grade. Roll stamp a type 9 . Serial number would be 1937. That's it.

Why would some one go through the trouble of engraving a receiver like that then assembling it like this ??? Could it be a rejected receiver engraved by a newer engraver that didn't meet the grade ?? Then factory worker assembled it to use ?? Maybe rejected because of two serial numbers didn't match ?? Dunno ???

And to Gamemaster32 I can appreciate you not thinking engraving is factory. The writing and numbers seem to be not so great engraving but to me the two side panels and top look factory. Maybe someday we will find out.

I have a friend that owns a rare Remington mod 81-E grade also manufactured in 1937 it also has a bear on one side panel and a deer on the other. If you compare the the the engraving between the two I believe it was most likely done by the same engraver. I am posting blown up pictures of both. What do you think ?? The first pictures are the 141 then model 81 follows on both sides. John Taylor

I believe the 141-E to be Remington engraved 100 percent !!! John Taylor

It is a beautiful 141E, quite different from my Ennis engraved 141E. I believe mine is a bit later. I believe it now lives in Delaware. Bill Murphy
