Late production model 95 double derringer

I just picked up this very nice model 95. I believe it is a type 4, but it is ribbed, not a monoblock. It has what seems to be a high serial number - L99565. I believe the date code is KZ. Photos attached. I'd appreciate your thoughts on it. Thanks. Steve

Hello,

Nice Double Derringer. Your gun is a fourth model, fourth variation. First variation has no L prefix serials. Second variation has the L prefix, with bright blue finish, third variation has a matte blue finish, and the fourth variation is the monoblock with no side rib.

Remington went to the L prefix after making 3,000 sequential numbers starting in 1912. The l prefix guns were in blocks begriming with 69, 75, 76, and 9x. But Remington did not use the blocks in sequence, so no telling when it was made. Your MZ date code means that the gun was shipped in May of 1931. Please note that the shipping date and the manufacturing date can be years apart. The last DD was shipped in Jan of 42 is serial L75757. It must have sat on a shelf for a long time.

Daniel - thanks for the reply and details. I'm a little confused on two points.

- you said mine is a 4th variation monoblock with no rib. But there appears to be a rib between the upper and lower barrels. It seems that I dont understand the differrence. Can you clarify? Maybe a photo showing the difference would help.

-you state the MZ date code is May 1931. What I see on the underlug is KZ, not MZ. Am I looking at it wrong ? I dont have a date code decoder ring. Is KZ May 1931?

Steve, I was going to say Dan didn't have his glasses on , but I'm sure it was just a typo. His production information is correct. Your O/U is a 4th Model 2nd. variation. Also KZ is May 1931.
I also have an opinion on the derringer itself, but feel an unsolicited comment isn't proper.

Correct, that there are some typos in my reply. Along with a couple of brain farts! Your gun is polished, so it should be a second variation. I have no idea why the MZ got typed. It is KZ, and that is May of 1931. Now I need to go and wipe the egg off of my face! Sorry for the unnecessary confusion, I throw myself on the mercy of the court!

I noticed your Derringer is 100% nickel. The typical Remington nickel ones had the hammer, trigger,extractor, and take down lever blued. Thus yours could have been refinished. I'm not saying t is, just that it isn't what we normally see.

Thanks for your observation. Being 90 years old, it is quite possible. If it was, it was well done. It was not over polished, the edges all remain crisp. I'm quite pleased with it.

It may not sit well with some, but I plan to shoot it a little. I reload a variety of vintage rimfire cartridges - including .41 rimfire short. These previously fired, copper cases were reprimed and loaded with 12.0gr of Old Eynesford 3F - a duplicate of the original load. I've shot and chronographed them in a Colt 3rd model derringer several times. I'll do the same with this one.

I took the derringer to the range and tried it with the reloaded copper case cartridges. Black Bart was caught cheating at cards. It didn't end so well for him
