Greetings from a novice shotgun owner. I just bought an 11-87 Premier, 12 ga, used. Could someone clarify a couple of things, if possible? This gun doesn't seem to have a 2-letter date code on the barrel. Does that place its DOB in the 1999-2001 period when they stopped stamping the barrel? The reason I ask is, the barrel is 21". In the research I have done, the 11-87's had 28" & 26" barrels. I think some even had 30" barrels. Not sure about this short barrel. Any thoughts?
One other question. What is the larger screw on the muzzle end of the rear sight for? The sight was loose, so it appeared that screw, because it faced straight down, would secure the sight. However, it was tightened down all the way. Finally, after looking at it, I figured out the small screw on the side actually clamps down the sight. So, still unsure about that other screw.
Thanks in advance!
ADD: I figured out the sight. One thing I did notice was an "X" marked on the right side of the barrel, a little separated from the proof marks.

Can't visualize what you've got, but here's some info on the 11-87.

Re: 11-87 Premier Questions
You have a rifle sighted deer barrel. It does not have the gas bleed off system of regular 11-87 barrels, but unless someone put an 1100 barrel on it, it should have the same shape barrel gas ring so the fore arm will fit properly. I don't see where they made a Premier model deer gun, but they did catalog a Special Purpose 11-87 (matte finish on stock and metal) deer gun and a Premier (gloss blue) deer extra barrel. Does the finish on your barrel match the receiver?
Lack of a date code on the barrel is more indicative of Remington's lack of concern for such things. I have two factory original guns with no date code and one extra barrel the same way. They have not made the Premier models for a lot of years now. They marketed the glossy 1100s mainly at the target market and took the 11-87 towards a hunting and more inexpensive market.
Depending on condition, you possibly have a quite nice and desirable gun. Regular 11-87 barrels will fit.

What could have happened... did.

Thank you Virginian & Wulfman,
The barrel appears to match the receiver. They look to be blued. I've attached pics.
