Question on old Remington shotgun?

Post by rossround »

I do appreciate any and all replies. My buddy has an older shotgun marked Remington Arms Co. It has damascus barrels, 10 gauge, and seems to be in very good shape. If you can tell me anything about it from this blurry picture, any info would be welcome.
Thanks,
Ross

Model 1889

Post by Researcher »

The only hammer double made by Remington Arms Co. has become known as the Model 1889. A few very early guns from 1888 were numbered in the numbers from the E. Remington & Sons Model 1885/87s then the serial numbers began at 30000 and ran up to about 105,000 in 1900 which was overlapping into tha hammerless doubles serial numbers, so they jumped to 200,000 for the hammer guns and the highest recorded number is 259,247 in the 1910 cleanup, for about 134,200 produced. Early on they were made in 10- and 12-gauge with the 16-gauge added to the line circa 1897. They were made in seven grades. The lowest, Grade 1, had decarbonized steel barrels. Grade 2 had twist barrels and Grade 3 had Damascus barrels. Grades 4 to 7 had increasingly finer Damascus barrels with increasing amounts of engraving, finer wood and more elaborate checkering.

Best I can tell the gun pictured looks like a Grade 2.
