Originality?

Greetings all:

I'm wondering if Model 12 barrels were dated as they were manufactured or after they were assembled onto a receiver?

Saw a very late serialized rcvr sporting a bbl. dated 1932 (year code "A"). Looked absolutely original in every respect with no stamped repair codes.

Likely factory original or not?

Not sure what your definition of a "very late" is, but they were made for a number of years after 1932.

I suspect there's another possibility.......that a non-factory gunsmith put a barrel from a different model 12 onto that receiver for some reason.

I am familiar with the date codes page, however had not seen the production info. Thanks for educating me with that link. I had relied on inaccurate info obtained elsewhere (indicating production ending before sernr 821000) in dating the receiver which I now know was not “very late,” but likely produced ca. mid-1936.

My original question still stands: Is it likely/possible a Model 12 left the factory with a 1932 dated bbl. on a 1936 serialized rcvr?

Any info is very much appreciated.
