Need help with Remington 1875

Hello I recently acquired a Remington 1875 from a local shop but when I got home I noticed some odd things with the revolver and I am in need of expert opinions. First thing is there is no barrel address not even a trace that it was there. Next under the serial side grip there is a weird illegible stamp almost like a hallmark. The serial reads 18 but looks to be stamped upside down? On the reverse side under the grip it is marked, "S.D.Levy REP." Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Arizonian,

Can't hep with the markings other than the serial. Hopefully one of our 75 experts will jump in with the answer. No marking on the bbl makes me think that it is a replacement. The serial looks like an upside down 81. Check the tab on the trigger guard for the serial.

By the way, that is probably a batch number, not a serial number. What caliber?

The triggerguard tab is also marked "18" or "81" and there are no markings on the bottom of the barrel or the ejector housing. It is marked 44 for the caliber on the frame. The ejector housing dosent seem to match up to the barrel but the patina matches perfectly on the whole revolver. I guess my main question is is it a real 1875 or were there fakes and copies made like the colt saa's? I am able to return the revolver and get my money back if it doesn't check out.

It appears to be all original and all the same gun as opposed to being a parts gun. You have to remove the ejector assembly to see the number on the bbl bottom. The 44 on the frame means that it is a 44-40, but use only black powder if you decide to shoot it. Not even the "black powder substitutes" should be used in any old black powder pistol.

These are "Jeweler Markings" they are a stamp that a store would stamp on the frame for identification of their property. I found this on a Colt Dragoon Second model once. The same sort of stamping, usually done on the frame.
