I have a Model 721 in 30-06 S/N 23893 but I'm not understanding the date code (see pics). Shouldn't there be another letter or 2?

23893 would probably be marked R SS for 11/47 or thereabouts.
Your pictures show the mark missing. I do not recall ever seeing an unmarked one.

Yes, I can shoot some more pictures. My curiosity is why the barrel isn't marked as it should be and what the actual marking means. I'm assuming that the left side mark is suppose to be a 'U' but that doesn't correspond to anything about this rifle in terms of date of manufacture. Is the mark on the bottom of the barrel anything meaningful?

Look on page 5 of this topic. Click the thumbnail picture of a D SS rifle. If your 23893 was date marked, it would look like that. The U shaped mark is a proof, inspection or assembly mark as are the marks on the other side. The mark on the bottom corresponds to what is usually an index mark to index the barrel sights to the action.

The 23893 is stamped inside the bolt rail I assume. The condition of the blue finish looks so good I suspect a well cared for rifle, or a reblue at some time. I can see a plug screw on the scope base mount hole. It might never have been removed. Possibly replaced at a reblue. Look for signs of being polished. Rounded edges, nooks with a different sheen due to being less accessible. Also the sight we see the rear of is not a typical original (1947-1958) dovetail sight. (1958-1962) sights have a screw--on base)

The blue looks to be original. The stock looks like it was probably varnished over.

The bluing sure looks original to me ! Could be the code was forgotten then overlooked by inspectors ? It is an early model. I have seen some goofy marks and codes on Remingtons. Nice rifle I would call it original other than the sights and there is nothing wrong with them ! John Taylor

my 721 3006 with the serial # in the left receiver rail, with a little higher # than yours does not have the rear receiver tapped and I think it may have been reblued.

Whats the difference between a Model 70 and a 721? Both are 06. The 721 has a slot at the end of the chamber with 2 screw holes in the top front of the receiver plus a side safety that slides forward and back. The Model 70 has a different safety like a Mauser. On the side. Plus the same 2 threaded holes in the from top of the receiver, and a hole at the rear with a hole on the round part of the bolt. Both guns are unmodified as far as I can tell. Oh, the 721 has a screw instead of a push button to release the chamber plate. The actions look quite different as well.

front and rear rings both tapped with two holes
gun rechambered to 270/338 by Atkinson and Marquardt, Prescott, in 1961; butt pad, cheek piece added about the same time, in Fairbanks. sling swivels added a couple of years ago.
markings on bbl; left side; odd mark, PWW, sideways 6 or 9, slightly higher on bbl.
right side; 12, REP (in oval box), part of trifoil (?), part of diamond tilted left.

I recently picked up a 721 in 30-06. The serial # is 24xxx and is on the inside of the receiver. I've dated it 2/48 by the barrel codes found on this sight. It has some wear but is a tack driver. The stock is checkered and has some odd inlays. Did any factory stock come with such items? I know some stocks were checkered and my "57 shooters bible shows two different grades with checkered stocks but have found no examples to compare with. Any info would be appreciated.

Hope I'm posting this correctly. I have a Model 722 in 222 Remington I am trying to date. S/N is on left side and is 189370. Same side on barrel is xxx 44 , any help would be appreciated.

Thank you very much for the information. I have another question regarding the stock. It is not the plain wood stock, it appears to be stained Tiger Maple. The marking on the pistol grip and buttplate look exactly like the proof marks on the barrel. Any thoughts ? Thanks.

First, I’ve found this post very useful. Thank you for everyone’s contributions.

I inherited my grandfather’s 721 earlier this year upon my dad’s passing. From what I could glean, my grandfather’s 721 30-06 was manufactured in September, 1948. Could someone with more expertise than me (of which I have none) either verify, or correct my assessment, and perhaps offer any other details that these photos might reveal?

Thank you in advance. I have lots of questions like these, which I did not have the opportunity to ask my dad about before he passed.
