I have acquired an an usual Remington 11-48 it is heavily engraved with silver inlaid scenes on both sides of the receiver and engraving about 8 inches up the barrel. The perplexing part is That it has standard straight grain walnut stocks but they seem to have a higher level of finish applied. The shotgun is gorgeous and in nearly new condition, I was wondering if anybody out there has ever seen one of these before. I was only able to find one and it didn’t have the original barrel it did have straight grain walnut Stocks but they had been custom carved.

Screams something a U.S. serviceman got engraved and inlaid while stationed in Japan.

I agree with "Researcher" and along with another thing you mentioned.....the stock. The grade of wood doesn't match what a factory or Custom Shop gun would look like. It didn't leave the factory that way. Someone engraved it later. And, as has been mentioned, lots of them were done in Japan for servicemen stationed there at the time (post-WW2 and Korea).

There is only one problem with that line of thinking it has to be factory blue finish it has not been re-blued.

I guess you are entitled to believe that if you want to.
Re: Possible factory engraved Remington 11-48 mfg 1954
Are you saying that’s possible to custom engraved a firearm without refinishing it and maintaining the original factory blue and be undetectable to an expert.
Re: Possible factory engraved Remington 11-48 mfg 1954
What makes you think that it hasn't been refinished?
AND.......
What "expert" inspected it?
Actually, after looking at the images "blown-up" (enlarged), I am of the opinion that the engraving is more rudimentary or amateurish than my previous impression. In other words, the work ain't that great compared to some of the others I looked up on the Internet. Sorry.......I'm not changing my mind on this one.
The "standard" factory wood is the big giveaway though. And, you obviously had your doubts when you originally posted mentioning that fact, too.

One more thing, the Custom Shop at Ilion started with clean receivers. That roll-stamped Remington and Model 11-48 on the right side wouldn't be there. That information would be engraved (or sometimes stamped) on the bottom of the receiver ahead of the loading port as on this Model 11-'48-F
