Navy fake Carbine #2: Range Report & Photos

Post by Skirmisher »

Howdy,

Thanks for the helpful replies to my prior post. So I confirmed this is a Navy barrel reamed out to .50-70 caliber. I went to the range with two loads. The first is my regular load of 55g Goex 3f & a 425g conical from Buffalo Arms. As usual, I posted a 2" red dot about 18" below the target's bull as these old warhorses usually shoot at least a foot high. My first shot at 50 yards drilled the red dot when the sight was held "pumpkin on a post". Clearly the funky rear sight (see pics) was dialed in at 50 yards! See the picture for the next 4 rounds: three touching each other and one 2" away. I was pleased. The 350g bullets with 59g of 3f were less successful. They hit low (?!) and did not group well. So much for that experiment; I'll stick to the original bigger bullet. The 100 yard target was also less successful with both loads not grouping well I believe largely because I had to hold the sights above the bull to get it in the black at all. I should have just confirmed that it grouped OK at 100 instead of trying to hit the bull. I plan to replace the rear sight with something more original from rollingblockparts.com.
It was a fun day; the range master commented on how the windows in his office rattled every time I set it off. You just cannot beat black powder! See the pictures attached.

Carbine rear sights are often available on GunBroker.com. But you have to look at lots of pictures to see the differences in the original sight leaves for .50 RF, .50-70, .43 Spanish.
