Reminton 600 Mohawk worth it?
Reminton 600 Mohawk worth it?
Hello,I am new here and a frien of mine picked up a 600 Mohawk that I can get for $180.That is what he paid.Anyway,Its a decent looking rifle. It does need the stock finish redone, and the rear sight is missing. Also,it may need bedding work as the barrel is almost touching the left side of the forearm, but has a gap on the right, and if I tighten the front action screw nice and snug, the bolt wont close. The screw is a hair long,I guess.Anyway, would the gun be worth messing with?Where can I find a rear sight?Any aftermarket stocks avalible?Oh,this gun is in 243.
I'm sure that the action alone would be worth $180!
Buy the gun and take it to a gunsmith and buy a new stock and start fresh.
Just remember that if someone is selling something like this. You know that there is something wrong with it. Which is what is making you question - right off the bat if it is a good investment.
It's not a $400 - $600 gun in mint condition. It is $180 that people tore apart and lost the pieces and put back together hap hazard and now is mostly junk.
If you are not in the market for a 243 - it is not a good investment.
If your plans are to dis assemble it and piece it out, you can probably double your money on E Bay.

Got to disagree about the stock. It sounds like the action screw was over tightened and crushed the underlaying wood. This would make the action screw too long. It is a simple fix. The stock sounds like the original stock and should remain with the rifle. That model is not made anymore and would be a good bet of becoming a collector's piece in the distant future. The bedding can be changed to improve the barrel clearance. The rear sight could be replaced or left off and the holes plugged. It sounds like a good deal and something it would be fun to work on. A collection starts with one gun and at times, a collection is one gun. Best of luck and enjoy.
If you haven't bought it, buy it. Take a look on http://www.gunbroker.com, even a junk 600 Mohawk brings a good buck. $180 is a steal. Like the guy said, one gun at at time. I have become quite fond of the little 600, and spend most of my spare time looking for a deal on one of them. I haven't had the luck to find one for $180, and the prices keeps going up. Who would have thought that a gun that went new for $149 in the 60's would bring $6500.00 (a 600 vent rib caliber .223 just a month ago or so on gunbroker).
