Remington Model 11 Shotgun

Post by Ashcroft »

Hello I just recently was given a Remington Model 11 12 guage shotgun. I was originally told that it was from the 50s but upon more research I have found it to be much earlier as for one it wasnt produced after the late 40s. But I also found through a websit that gave ranges of serial numbers from 10,000 - 510,750 for the 12 guage models, and as high as 1.075 million total produced up until 1947. My serial number is 167645. I am interested in finding out its exact year of production if anyone can give me some more information on this. The date code on the Barrel if I remember dates at least the barrel to late 40s, so possibly a replacement, or then again maybe not I havent taken it off to check if the numbers match. The gun itself is in great condition, its all the smooth wood style, not checkered. It still functions perfectly, took it out to the range the other day and shot trap with it, great accurate gun to use. Once I realized how unusual it was after shooting it is when I looked it up and started to find its a bit older and perhaps more valuable than I thought. So now I wont just use this as a gun to just use and abuse since its quite a bit older and nice than I thought. I would like to find out as much about it as I can, age, value, historic significance of the model, more accurate production values for the years if possible. I have become very fond of it since shooting trap with it. Thanks ahead of time for your help everyone. Take Care. -Steve

There just is not much market for these old Remington autoloaders. Hard to get $200 for a nice one. I have a full set, 12-, 16-, and 20-gauge, all in nice shape, and two of my three with solid ribs and I didn't spend $600 on the collection.

They shoot fine. Not long ago I ran a 25 straight at Skeet with my 20-gauge! I've run several with my 12-gauge which is cylinder and my 16-gauge which is improved cylinder, but my 20-gauge is modified and one has to be a little more precise in the pointing.

When Remington added the 20-gauge to the Model 11 line in 1930 they began with serial number 1,000,000 and the 16-gauge began with serial number 1,500,000. The gun known as the Model 11 was introduced in 12-gauge in 1905 by Remington Arms Co. as the "Remington Autoloading Gun." When Remington Arms Co. and Union Metalic Cartridge Co. combined in 1911 as Remington-UMC they began calling the gun the Model 11. About 1920 the company became Remington Arms Co., Inc. In 1934 DuPont acquired controlling interest in Remington Arms Co., Inc., and in 1985 they called in all the Remington stock and issued DuPont stock in exchange. So, if your gun is marked Remington Arms Co., Inc. you know it was made after 1920.

I too recently acquired a Rem. model 11. When I called Remington with the serial number, they were able to tell me the production year: 1913! This gun was probably refinished sometime in its past, because the wood and bluing are about 95%. You can get some general history, and a number to call off their website. Enjoy your gun!
