Can anyone give me info on this rifle?

Post by helric1 »

Hello, I'm new here and I know very little about rifles. I inherited this and would like to find any information about it. When I look up Modelo Argentino 1879 EN, a very different looking rifle comes up. Can anyone tell me anything or send me a link? Thanks!

This is most likely a carbine made from an Argentine Modelo 1879 rifle, by shortening the barrel and adding a carbine rear sight. Many hundreds were so modified and imported into the US in the 1950/1960 period - surplus Argentine guns. These were caliber .43 Spanish.

That's what I like about this forum... The right answer by the right person at the right time.

Thanks! That certainly makes sense. This was just a cool wall decoration at my parent's house. It will probably be the same at my place now. I know the rifle isn't in great shape but does it have any value? Is it something a collector would be interested in if I decided not to keep it?

It is not a highly desired collector item, since it is modified from its original condition. But it is worth more if you don't try to "make it look better." Worth a very few hundred dollars, since so many were imported, and they are often offered for sale.
