Model 31 wood finish

Hello. Can someone tell me what is the correct wood finish for an early (checkered stock) model 31, varnish or oil or other? Thanks

Factory sales manual of era calls for 2 coats of sprayed on varnish after stained filler. Jay Huber RSA
