REM 1858 .44 " new model"
First off, I would like to thank " you" for the opportunity of being included on this forum.
I have a number of questions concerning a Rem 1858 I just acquired.
Serial # 622xx date ? Also is ther any extra inspectors marks that would indicate an Arsenal refit or refinish? The condition is somewhat " scary" good . All small light lettering and the most minute inspectors marks are still sharp and crisp, showing no signs of buffing ? There is a very clear cartouche " BH" on grip left side , and tiny " c" on the bottom of each grip. Left side on octagon near frame is " L" then on frame " W" and another " W" by recoil shield. Numerous " A"'s on cyl. Then two upside down "A" 's on the right side barrel and frame. Serial number matching on inside of bottom strap under grips and inside brass trigger guard when removed. Thx. Y'all . Appreciate ANY help and info U can share. Apparently I can't upload the pics even though low res. w my phone? Sorry
Rem 1858 new model Army .44 Help? :)
Re: Rem 1858 new model Army .44 Help? :)
Hello Accumulator,
Welcome to the forum. Your revolver was shipped to the Government in March of 1864. The small letters are sub-inspector marks and the BH cartouche belonged to Benjamin Hannis who was a Principal Sub-inspector. I am not aware of any specific inspector marks denoting an arsenal refit or refinish but some revolvers have multiple stamps on the same part so it is possible some of the marks were after a refit or refinish. If you want to learn about Remington Army and Navy revolvers I suggest you buy a copy of Don Wares book Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861-1888.
I hope this helps,
