I'm looking for help to identify a pistol which has been passed down in my family.
It has the following markings:
top of barrel: PATENTED SEPT. 14. 1858
E.REMINGTON&SONS.ILON.NEWYORK.U.S.A.
NEW MODEL
bottom of barrel: 094
top of cylinder head: 1080
Additionally, I'd like to know who may be a resource to restore it and where I may research some history on it.
Thank you.

Re: Help To Identify Pistol
Need more information. This could be a New Model Army, Navy, Single or late model Double action Belt Revolver.MikeM wrote:I'm looking for help to identify a pistol which has been passed down in my family.

Army - 44 Caliber, 8" barrel.
Navy - 36 Caliber, 7-3/8" barrel.
Belt's are both 36 Caliber w/ 6-1/2" barrels (single or double action) Only late doubles and (double) conversions have this barrel markings.
I would strongly recommend you DO NOT RESTORE this firearm or clean/buff with anything but oil and elbow grease, repair to working order is a different story. This pretty much removes most collector interest and will almost certainly significantly reduce it's value.

Thank you for your response and advice. The barrell length is 4 1/2 inches. I've placed a link below with a picture of the pistol. I would like to have it put back into working order.

Re: RE: Identify Pistol
Looks like a New Model Police Revolver then I guess they marked the conversions differently on them as well? Nickel or Silver? and engraved, hum... What doesn't work?MikeM wrote:Thank you for your response and advice. The barrell length is 4 1/2 inches. I've placed a link below with a picture of the pistol. RE: Identify Pistol
Police model makes sense. The pistol belonged to my Great Grandfather who was a city sheriff.
I think the metal may be nickel but I'm not sure. I think a spring in the firing mechanism is broken.
