I was very lucky to acquire a Remington Model 30R Carbine recently. It is .30-06 caliber has stock markings for the Pennsylvania State Police. All information I have seen on the Carbines said that they had barrel mounted rear sights but this one has the early style Remington Model 30 peep sight on the rear bridge. Serial is in the 13000 range and barrel date code shows June 1927 both of which are higher than I thought possible for this rear sight. Other differences are the lack of antiglare engraving on top of the receiver ring and rear bridge, no D&T for a Lyman or Redfield receiver sight, and the front sight bead is dovetailed into the front sight base. I wonder if early carbines used this sighting system and the later ones had the Model 30 Express Rifle receiver and barrel sights?
Hi again! Just taking another look at the pics. Making a copy for my lib of model 30 pics. These and Winchester model 54s' are my favorite bolt actions.
You lucked out and got a beaut! Early model with the ramp/peep sight. Also push cock I believe?
My example does not have the Penn. State Police markings and has a pinned in front sight rather than a dovetailed one like yours, but is very close in serial number and is otherwise identical. I have two other carbines in my collection, a 7.65 Argentine with barrel mounted sights in the 17,000 range and a 30 Rem. in the 13,000 range with barrel mounted sights and a Redfield peep sight. All of the carbines are cock on opening, with pinned in front sights and have flat steel buttplates with 40 serrations. My favorite "shooter" is the .30 Rem. because the Redfield peep on the rear and a flat top front sight come up so naturally. Nice little rifles!
