Model 12 Year
Model 12 Year
I just got a slick little Model 12. The man I got it from thought it was made in 1935, but I was wanting to check. Ser. #8349xx. I'd sure appreciate the information. Also do I need to stay with ammo that is rated under 1100 fps?
Re: Model 12 Year
Your serial # is off the chart. The last # Rem shows is 831,000 and change. That's not unusual with Rem. Yours was probably a mop-up rifle made in or around 1938. Check the barrel code info on the home page. That will give you the month/year of assembly. The second letter will be a "G" if 1938 is correct.
I recommend sticking with standard velocity ammo.

Re: Model 12 Year
Thank you John. I hadn't even seen those marks until you mentioned it. Had to break out the magnifying glass. It shows E D, which looks like September 1936. Wasn't this the last year of the model 12? I've got some CCI Standard Velocity (1070 FPS) but I haven't noticed any others that specifically say standard velocity. I just got it yesterday and will be trying it out tomorrow.
Re: Model 12 Year
1936 was the last "official" year of the M/12 with 4,030 made that year, but... There was mop-up of one in 1937 & one in 1938 according to Rem records. There were at least a few more since I have seen more than the published totals.
Re: Model 12 Year
So do you think that with my serial number that this is a 1936 made barrel that was assembled in 37 or 38?John Gyde wrote:1936 was the last "official" year of the M/12 with 4,030 made that year, but... Re: Model 12 Year
According to a former Rem factory historian, the barrel code is the date the rifle was assembled. Some argue that the date code is stamped before assembly, but I go by the factory info....
Re: Model 12 Year
Thanks a lot John, for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I took it out today and it sure was a pleasure to shoot.
