remington sxs "c" style hammers 1889?

Post by joejames »

I have a SxS with a S# of 248763. First, How do you tell the grade? there is a 1 about 1/2" before the s#. Would this make it a grade 1? It is in great condition and fully functional, does anyone have any tips on how to mount a shotgun. I want to preserve it as long as I can.

Your gun is a Remington Arms Co. Model 1889, made in about 1905. The three lowest grades of the Model 1889 had no engraving, and were differentiated by the type of barrel material. The lowest, the Grade 1, had "Decarbonized Steel" barrels. Grade 2 had Twist barrels and Grade 3 Damascus barrels. Grades 4 to 7 had increasingly finer Damascus barrels, along with increasing amounts of engraving, fancier checkering and higher quality wood.

mount it ? Put it up to your shoulder , and pull the trigger . These guns were built to shoot , not mount on the wall like a deer head . Paul
