Rolling Block N0 2 info needed
Re: Rolling Block N0 2 info needed
It is a No.2. The caliber should be stamped on the bottom of the barrel in front of the forearm. Barrels were usually 24" to 26" long but, I suppose anything is possible.
Re: Rolling Block N0 2 info needed
It will NOT be .38 Special. No doubt it has been fired. Take a look at the front or face of the breech block. You will see where the firing pin hole is in the block. You will also see the impression of the back end of the case from firing. If the firing pin hole is at the BOTTOM of the mark from the case head, then you have a .38 rim fire. If the firing pin hole is at the CENTER of this impression then you PROBABLY have a .38-40 WCF chambered rifle. .38 RF is far more common than a .38-40. The nice thing about the No2 Rolling Block is that breech blocks are interchangeable. My 1st No2 is chambered for the .25-20 single shot cartridge. I use that breech block in a No 2 chambered for the .32 RF extra long and one in .38RF. For the .38RF I trim .38 Special cases to .38RF length and shoot it.
Re: Rolling Block N0 2 info needed
Remington made the No 2 in .38-40WCF. There are a couple of other obscure calibers in center fire that could possibly have been chambered in the No 2. The .38 Long centerfire and the .38 Ballard, Extra Long. The only way to tell for sure is to make a chamber cast. The .38-40 WCF has a base diameter of .465". The .38 Long and .38 Ballard have base diameters of .379". Using a caliper to measure the rear end of the chamber should give you a good idea as to what it is. In the era these things were made, anything is possible. That goes for the barrel length. From photo #2 everything looks proportional. Of course, that is not near as good as having it in hand. You measured the barrel from the muzzle to the face of the closed breech block? Does it look like it has been obviously cut down?
Information on all the particulars of the No 2 are not available. I bought a No 2 years ago advertized as a .32 Rim Fire. Turned out to be chambered for the .32 Extra Long Rim Fire. I can find no reference to this rifle in this caliber.
No 2s in .38-40 and .44-40 are highly desirable in nice condition.
