It's definitely not factory, so I don't know how anyone would really know.

Was there not a "D" grade or the like 721. I've seen factory engraved ones personally but do not remember the pattern! Looking at the stock again, I'll bet it is a factory job.

The serial seen in the picture 3935xx would fit here
3917xx 721-06 D C 9/56
3935xx
4040xx 721-300M P D 6/57

There was a "D" grade, but the engraving would far exceed a "D". Looking at the checkering and the way the fore-end is attached, I would bet against factory work. I don't believe that the "M" would be stamped by a Rem engraver. From what I have seen, they are much more discreet in their "signing" & have fun hiding their initials in the scene somewhere....

From what I understand engravers from Remington back then were not suppose to sign there work. They would secretly and VERY small engrave there initials in a rock or a tree truck etc.... It will take a while with a magnify glass to find it if signed. This engraving holds no Remington characteristics.
Is the capital M inscribed on the side of the barrel possible an engraver's mark. Also how is it that my serial number 393587 indicates that it was made in 1959, but the barrel is marked LC 7 which would make it around 1956?
The dates are often off by up to a year. Yours stretches that but is probably correct.

You did give another clue. Many (but not all) high grade Rems did not stamp a date code on the barrel.
