Paul!
My "opinion" is that someone immediately removed the 701-1/2 long leaf sight and installed the Redfield receiver sight which would explain why there are no signs of wear around the dovetail. It is possible that at that point in production the factory "may" have offered that receiver sight as an option, they did have a bunch of sight options available.

The barrel code on your rifle dates to June 1937 and I will prompt Tom Hemphill to check his stock of Remington catalogs to see if they list a Redfield Receiver sight as an option. Redfield at the time had both a Model 102B or BX sight that would fit along with a 102 Tang Sight, the latter of which would have been an easy installation.

Hemphill is a lovable but demanding fellow and will probably insist on you providing him with the Caliber and full serial for his ever expanding and much needed data base in exchange for his info.

Regards!
