Some dummy converted it to a Hornet. I call them a dummy for two reasons; they didn't stamp it as such, and the 500 series action is not stout enough for the hornet cartridge. Even if the action would take the pressure, the quality of the work would be suspect if the "gunsmith" didn't bother to restamp the caliber on the barrel. It sounds like the serial # was filed off??? Check the barrel code (instructions on the home page) and see if was made in 1968. If so, you have a serious problem if the serial # has been removed.
The barrel can be easily removed. I recommend that you not fire the gun again, remove the barrel & throw it away.

My response was a little more direct than usual. I mean no disrespect to the individual who inherited the gun. At the risk of getting back in the direct mode...If the individual who did the work is still alive his/her tools should be taken away.
