First post- model 14 in 25 cal.
Nice website here- all the information I could ever need about my model 14 is here, or in nambujim's head. Rifle belonged to my dad, and I think I want to get it working properly, as he had planned to do over the last forty years or so. From browsing a bit, I have determined that the follower is undersized, the carrier dog spring is very weak, and I am missing the carrier friction plunger/screw. He used it as a single shot, so at least it is a shooter. I would like to know if Jim still has carrier springs for this rifle? How critical are the friction plunger /spring to the operation of the 14? Obviously they must be there for a reason, but I haven't stumbled across that info yet. Thanks to whoever keeps this site running so well!!

Lon!
It is not uncommon for someone to shoot these rifles single shot, I do it almost all the time!
I am unsure just what parts you might be missing but if the Carrier Dog Spring is bad/broken/weak the cartridges will not feed or feed poorly from the magazine. There is NO screw related to the carrier itself so I am a bit confused but YES the "Carrier Friction Plunger" does serve a purpose otherwise the Carrier would slide around in the slot, the plunger actually has an opening where it secures itself and thus keeping the carrier in place......no screw is involved but rather a spring loaded hollow plunger.
About 1/2 inch of your follower should show at the loading door, if it slides beyond or up into the action then yours "might" be undersize.
I have had a run on carrier plungers (they came in two sizes) and to be clear I work on these rifles and prefer not to sell parts because of the tremendous variation in them. I could replace your "Carrier Dog Spring" with just the triggerguard and if you sent the action bar/magazine tube I could fit a spring/plunger to the carrier but would have no way of testing the rifle after
doing all that. If you included the magazine spring/follower I could determine whether the follower was undersize.............but it probably would be best if I had the whole rifle. I'm not soliciting business but rather stating the facts and with these rifles you NEVER know what you re getting into.
I hope this info helps!

Re: First post- model 14 in 25 cal.
Hi Jim
Thanks for the response! Yeah, I meant plunger/spring, not screw. It probably flew off many years ago, and I only know about it from the parts diagram. And yes, the follower does slide by and goes up into the action. I read one of your previous posts about this. And while the carrier dog spring is not broken, I tried your fingernail snap test, and it is pretty clear it is very weak. That was probably the original problem with the rifle, as it used to jam often.
Sending the complete rifle and having you check it over would be wonderful, but doubt I could afford to do that right now. I may have to send just the other parts you mentioned (action bar/magazine,triggerguard, and follower/spring), if that is okay? Times are tough up here in Maine this time of year, as they are for everyone. But Dad is 82 and it would be great if I can get this rifle sorted out while he can still appreciate it. So PM an address, and I will try to get this shipped to you asap.
Thanks again,
Lonnie

Give me the serial number of the gun if you would, style of buttplate, type of sights, and I'll pass that info on to Tom Hemphill who keeps our data base. I also like to keep the serial of the gun/parts I work on. We don't put a name with the rifle/parts.
If you need to contact me directly its: nambujim@charlotte.twcbc.com
I find that in the distant past if someone had a dent or other related problem with the feed/magazine tube they would "operate" on the follower by reducing the diameter.............then you got a whole other set of problems. Replacing the "Carrier Dog Spring" can be an adventure if you haven't done it 100 times and having a missing carrier plunger is common..........you pull out the carrier to clean it and it pops out into orbit somewhere and you never even know it.
It would be best if you ship the action bar/mag tube, magazine spring, follower, & plug along with the trigger guard so I can make sure we have everything in hand. I would send the bolt along as well, I could check it over and clean three (3) key parts (ejector rod, ejector, & release button) along with a general going over.

Re: First post- model 14 in 25 cal.
Jim,
The serial number is c 60550. It had open buckhorn sights on it- I liked the little white diamond on the rear sight, and put them on my winchester. I will change them back after deer season. It does have the 2 tiny screws on the top rear of the receiver, where I believe I read a lyman tang peep sight was an option (2 on ebay for sale right now). The stock is missing a piece at that point, which I will try to repair. It has a steel buttplate- I do not know what the different styles are called.
The rifle has been in the family probably since 1918 or so when it was made. My great-uncle Ike traded it to his brother John for a 38-55 Craig that he coveted. Then John gave it to my father, who carried it hunting off and on when I was young. I shot my first deer when I was 11 as a result (the reloaded ammo he had at the time misfired, and I got my chance).
I will get the parts in the mail as soon as I can. If there are any questions , email me: lonmower@hotmail.com
Thanks for everything!
