I've been going on for a couple of hours trying to find a birth date is there any one who can help me out ? The "society " site did not have what I have. Also the model 552 shoots great and is in above average condition including a Tasco 3x - 7x20 scope - any chance someone could give me an approximate value ? Thank you for your time and help.
Well, you have to make some deductions and be somewhat familiar with what Remington did with these rifles over the years.
First, I'd suggest using a magnifying glass of some type to make sure you know what letters yours has impressed in the barrel.

According to the Remington website, the 552 has been in production since 1957.

It's also helpful to know if the barrel length is 23 1/2" or 21 1/2" and whether it's a "BDL" (impressed checkering) or plain "A" standard (smooth wood). And, over the years, they also used different checkering patterns in the "BDL" versions.
Somewhere around 1980 (give or take a year or so), they quit making the longer barreled version and only made the shorter one for both the 552 (auto) and 572 (pump) models.

If it's the longer barrel and plain wood, I don't think "W C" (Aug 1956 or Aug 1982) would work.
With the longer barrel and "A" or "BDL" grade, "C P" (Apr 1967) would work.

If it's a "C D", that would indicate either an Apr 1957 or Apr 1983 date. Depending on barrel length or wood style, those may or may not work.

Estimated "values" are not given on the forum for obvious reasons. However, if you do some searching on the gun auction sites, you may find some "ballpark" figures of what they're asking for them or what they've sold for. Whatever you paid for this one is it's current value.

Hope this helps some.

wild bill 22 wrote:Wulfman , Thank you very much for your time replying to my post . I do have the smooth wood or A model with 23 1/2 inch barrel . As to the letter marks using the magnifying glass and if Remington used lower case letters it is a p or wcp . If upper case letters were used the last letter first reaction is a p , but could possibly be a D . What does the number 78 mean at the end " wcp 78" ? Thanks again, Wild Bill 22
To the best of my knowledge, they used all upper case letters. (I've never found anything otherwise)
On my 552, it has the letters "P Z" for Jun 1975. The lower leg on the P is somewhat short, but there's enough there that I can tell it IS a "P". (It also has the plain wood and 23 1/2" barrel)
I would disregard the numbers ("78"). They are essentially assembly and/or inspectors' marks. Mine has "55" stamped in it. The serial number on mine (1975 vintage) is 18783XX. I don't know what they used for a beginning serial number, but, if yours in considerably below mine and quite a bit greater than "0000001", I'd still venture to guess it's probably that 1967 date I mentioned before.

What would the date be on a Model 522 with barrel marked KB93, also has a REP in an oval on the other side. Proof above the KB93 looks just like a Waffen Eagle, but I know its not. Any idea how old??

I'm presuming you meant "552"?

Without seeing it or any other information (stock style or barrel length), I'm going to guess May of 1981 based on the letters "K B".
