M/720s

Post by John Gyde »

I have M/720s in all three calibers. I haven't shot any of them yet and hate to for fear of damaging them. I'm not worried about their strength; only about me damaging them. I wondered if anyone has tried any of them and how they shot. I will get brave and take them to the range in the near future.

John
My Dad and I had two different 30-06 720 rifles. Both gone now. Shooting them was fine. Excellent guns. Those old Enfields were tough and smoothest of action. I wish I still had them Perhaps you have one.

I have the 30-06, 270 & the 257 Rem Roberts (as they were called then). The all have factory peeps (Lyman & Redfield were both offered). I want to shoot the .257...

If I get real adventuresome, I'll try to post some photos. I did take the .257 Rem Robts to the range today. With the peep all the way down it still shot about 1 1/2 feet high at 50 yds. I kept adjusting the sights so I don't know about the group.

I have a collection of 25 Roberts, 257 Remington Roberts, and 257 Roberts ammo. I never really checked them, but some ammo people say the case shoulder is slightly different from the Remington Roberts and the 257 Roberts??????? I don't know what you shot???????

I used newer Remington (code R257) 117 gr factory ammo. I sure didn't know there was a difference between .257 Rem Rbts & just .257 Robts. I thought they were the same thing... I'll take a closer look at the brass.

Well like I said I was just passing on hearsay. I personally never checked it out for facts. I collected the 25 Roberts and 257 Remington Robert ammo for quite some time now in hopes of buying a model 30 with the 25 Roberts stamping. Still looking, but admit have not looked real hard.
The 720 is a neat rifle. I've had several people try to sell me the 720 rifle that was awarded to the military. Never jumped on one though.

I checked the brass. The six rounds I fired looks fine.

Here's a pretty decent article which explains the .257 Roberts (or Remington-Roberts) and the changes in case/cartridge dimensions. For all intents and purposes, all rifles chambered for the .257 Roberts by Remington would have the identical case dimensions since they standardized it in 1934.

The mid barrel sight and peep are often different heights. The front sight blade often needs to be taller when you add a peep. If I recall correctly the front sight blade is pinned. Maybe Felton could make you a blade.

The front sight is pinned. Is Felton still around? I thought not... I've spent three months or so in AZ for the last ten years or a little less. There's a lot that happens here in OR that I miss. I should be gone only one month or a little less from now on. Back to the sight. It is a factory option so I hate to screw with it. I'll elevate the peep out of the way and try the regular rear sight.

John, I had the same problem wen I first used a Lyman 48 on my Remington 720. That was easily solved by replacing the front sight with a taller Marbles Sheard sight. Just drift out the two pins, install the new sight & put two pins back in place. My 720 and my Remington 30-S Express rifles shoot much better with the receiver peep sights than with the buckhorn sights. And you must have some kind of great karma to have found 720's in all three calibers!

I think with having all three 720's I wouldn't be modifying anything.

I agree. I wanted to shoot the .257 once mostly just to say I had done it. I wish it would have been dead-on, but I have other rifles I use for hunting. I don't think I'll mess with the front sight. The 30.06 & .270 will probably just stay in the rack.
