January 3, 1938, Dealers Price List
As a bit of an addendum to what Jay has already posted, according to my January 3, 1938, Dealers Price List, the the basic "Sportsman" A had a retail price of $49.95, while The "Sportsman" -- Skeet Gun with vent rib had a retail price of $71.50. A capped pistol grip and a slightly fuller (beavertail) forearm were feathres of the Skeet Gun. The Skeet Gun was also available with a solid rib for $65.20, or with a plain barrel for $57.20. There were also higher grade "Sportsman" -- B "Special" grade $80.70; D "Tournament" grade $144.50; E "Expert" grade $210.50; and F "Premier" grade $276.50.
Congrats on finding a "Sportsman" Skeet Gun! They don't seem to surface very often. I've only ever seen two, and they just happened to both have been 20-gauges.

From your description it sounds like you have the regular Sportsman Skeet Grade. The D, E, and F are of course hand engraved and have fancier wood and checkering patterns. The B was essentially the same metal as the A but with a selected imported Walnut stock and for an extra charge you could get special stock dimensions. I've handled very few of the higher grade old Remington repeaters, but some I recall were engraved with the grade on the bottom of the frame infront of the loading port.
