Hi everyone. I just recently acquired a Remington 742 in 30.06. The gun seems to be in pretty good shape, although I did see evidence of the peening on the receiver rails by the over-rotating bolt. The gas tube had a slight bend on the end; I lightly filed this down to return the tube to a straighter shape.
Does anyone have any advice, suggestions or opinions on these rifles? I had never handled one before last friday and I'm eager to try it out since I've cleaned it up and put 'er back together. One more thing; any suggestions for a good, inexpensive (I know, an oxymoron, lol) scope for this rifle? I would be using it in fairly dense post oak woods and hay meadows, but I'm not a really avid hunter and don't want to blow my gun budget. Again, thanks for your help, Gary

It is important to have a quality scope. Try a used Leupold. A fixed power should work just fine in the type of area you describe. An inexpensive scope will cause more grief than an inexpensive rifle. As a test, set the scope outdoors on a picnic table or something else that is firm. Then get behind it so you have the sight picture and get an object in the crosshairs. Then move your head around. Many cheap scopes will have the crosshairs move off the target as you change positions. Not a good thing.
