Does it have a serial number? Ignore the first letter and the two numbers. Your dating in likely correct.

IMHO I believe it was a decision thing as to where to put the serial number on the M66 because the receivers can be swapped between rifles with ease. What hat would accomplish, I don't know, but I believe it was considered.

Rem started stamping serial #s on their 22s in October 1967.

"J" is stamping from the final inspector when it was built.
