Model 34 tubular magazine question

Post by martinihenry »

Hello!

A friend brought me his Model 34 Remington the other day because he couldn't get the spring-loaded tube to fully insert into the magazine tube. I'm no gunsmith, but like to think I can handle most minor problems. A visual inspection revealed that the end of the spring-loaded tube was slightly out of round, and had a couple of abrasions on it, from my friend trying to push it into the magazine. I gently tapped on the end of the spring-loaded tube, and brought it closer to being nice and round, but it still hangs up. It goes in about 75% of the way, and stops cold. In removing the wood furniture, I didn't see any obstructions, or damage to the magazine. I briefly considered drifting out the pins in the action that holds everything together to get a better look inside the tube, but having no familiarity with this model, I decided not to venture further. Perhaps this is a situation where a competent gunsmith would be of assistance. It may just need a new spring-loaded tube...don't know. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Mucho appreciated!

Jason,
I'm not a gunsmith, but if I had this problem, I would insert a cleaning rod in the magazine tube to see if there is an obstruction. If it is clear you should see the tip at the front of the receiver. If it is blocked then I believe the tube would have to be removed to clear it.

Cleaning rod...

Post by martinihenry »

Oh, I should have mentioned that. I did take a cleaning rod, with a bronze bore brush on it, and go through the magazine tube without any problems. Looks like it's time to find a competent gunsmith, I suppose.

Thanks!
