Model 37 "Sporting"

Post by Glen Rodgers »

Does anyone have any knowledge of a Remington Model 37 Sporter? This rifle has a model 37 action in a sporter stock and a tapered sporter barrel. The first reaction is probably that this is a "sporterized" target model on which the barrel has been turned down. However, the barrel has the same Remington roll markings and patent dates as my target model 37, except that right under the Model 37 on the barrel in front of the receiver it is stamped "Sporting". The taper of the 25" barrel starts about an inch from the receiver within the area of the "Rangemaster" stamping and tapers from 1.04" to .61" at the muzzle.

Any information (or informed opinion) anyone can share about this rifle will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Glen

Glen:

I have not seen any documentation of a M/37 like you describe. But...Who knows what Remington might do on a given day... The odd thing is the word Sporting. Remington has used the term Sporter consistently over the years.

John,

Thanks for your response. I noted the "Sporter/Sporting" inconsistency as well. To add to the inconsistency, the stock has the Winchester 52 Sporter checkering pattern (and a horn grip cap and fore-end tip, a cheekpiece, a Remington buttplate, and super grade style swivels.) Anyone could have done the stock, but the most puzzling thing is the Remington tapered barrel with all the Rangemaster/Model 37 markings, plus the word "Sportiing".

Thanks,
Glen
