760 first year
760 first year
I have a 300 savage 760, 1st year production. It is smooth as butter as long as it is empty but is hard to open when a cartridge is chambered. Factory loads only from rem, fed, and win. The chamber has been checked and it is clear and clean and smooth. I read somewhere that this was a problem with the early rifles. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a cure.
Re: 760 first year
Are we talking loaded rounds or fired casings, or after firing a live round and extracting the empty shell? Lets start there.
Re: 760 first year
It is hard to unlock when anything is in the chamber, once it unlocks it operates normally. I dont use reloads in this rifle.

Cleanliness is what some of the 760 need. Remove your forend or buttstock; buttstock is usually easier. Remove trigger assembly. Use a good spray gun scrubber or automotive brake cleaner, being sure to let it run down and away from whatever wood you left on. Spray liberally, working the action often and also leaving it in varying positions as you soak it down and get rid of any crap that might be in there. I was told the 'smith at the place where I got mine cleaned it before I got it. 1/2 teaspoon of grit begged to differ when i cleaned it. Let it dry and then do it again. Let it dry again. Use a Teflon or silicon lube-NO oil in the action, paying close attention to getting some into the camming pin in the bolt. See if that helps. If not, smoke a casing or black-magic marker one and run it thru the action, dropping it into the chamber directly. Look for shiny spots where it might be causing an interference fit in the chamber. These rifles are known for slightly sloppy chamber to facilitate easier extraction, so I see no link in that regard.
