What is the serial number used for if not to establish manufacturing date?
Keep in mind that the date stamp will only pin down the date to a month and year. That could mean that several thousand like rifles would bear the same date stamp. The serial number would identify each of those rifles for ownership purposes. Used during the sale, warrantee repairs, standard repairs, law enforcement issues, etc.
