The cartouche on my grips are very faint, only the outline can be destinguished clearly.
I've tried to read it with a magnifying glass but I can't make heads or tail of it.
I tried to use Photoshop to enhanche a close up shot of the cartouche but that didn't work either.
Is there a way to "develop" the cartouche so that it could be read?
Reading faint cartouche
Re: Reading faint cartouche
Ryden
Sometimes is just almost impossible to make out the cartouche. Often I'm happy if I can just see a trace. I've had some success "lifting" the cartouche by GENTLY cleaning it a toothbrush and mild detergent. I've also had some success at identifying the cartouch by taking some pictures from differnt angles using my digital camera and the flash, then Photoshiping them. Last but not least, close examination with a good magnifying glass out in the bright sun will show things that nothing else will.
Good Luck,
George

Re: Reading faint cartouche
Ok, a light cleaning and then I'll bring the grip to work.
We've got a stereo microscope in the electronics workshop and I'll try that.
Is there a compilation of cartouches that I could compare against somewhere?
It's easier if you have a picture to work against.

Re: Reading faint cartouche
No dice
Not even under 80X was there any trace of lettering inside the cartouche, just the faint outline.

Re: Reading faint cartouche
Plan B - The outline
My S/N is 37474
Which inspectors handled this consignement?
The outline is quite conspicuous, it's the middle section of a circle.
I've not seen that shape yet in pictures, Ainsworth's and C.G. Chandler's cartouches have a rectangle with radiused corners and I've seen an oval one as well somewhere.
Does the shape ring a bell?

Re: Reading faint cartouche
Remington New Model Army Revolver, S/N 37474 is estimated to have a manufacturing date of September 1863. The serial number range for that month is estimated to be 34525 - 37825. The Principal Sub-Inspector at that time was Benjamin Hannis, who had replaced C.G. Curtis in early 1863. His cartouche was the letters "BH" in script within the standard border of two parallel horizontal lines and two opposing curved vertical lines.
One word of caution concerning the internet search for identifying the inspectors and their cartouches, the information shown in your question is outdated adnd newer research by Don Ware in his book on Remington Large Frame Revolvers is much more accurate.

A belated thanks Mike! I'll have to get me that book for sure.
