Remington 12 Semi-Auto shotgun/No model markings.

Post by ehowell »

I have a Remington 12 guage shotgun with no markings as to the model. The only markings is on the barrel which reads: "Manufactured by the Remington Arms Co. Ilion, N.Y. U.S.A. Browning's patents Oct8.1900.Dec.17.01 Sept.30.02.June 16.03"

There are no markings what-so-ever on the frame/reciever side-plates. The serial number 24XXX was found on the bottom side of the receiver where you would load the shells.

According to Remington, they say it sounds like a Model 11 which was built on the Browning patent and the year of manufacture was 1906. After I inquired as why no markings concerning the model, I received the following reply: "I don't have any idea of why there are no markings. It would be difficult to determine what went on 100 years ago. Thanks!"

Is this the John M. Browning designed squareback semi-auto which was introduced in 1905 as the Remington Automatic Sold Breech Shotgun? Either way, I'm trying to determine the age of the gun, year of manufacture and model. Thanks in advance for your help.

Your last paragraph identifies the gun. It was introduced in 1905 as REMINGTONS AUTOLOADING GUN and yours was made in 1906. They were not assigned the Model 11 nomenclature until 1911. The original gun frames were not marked. Jay Huber RSA
