Remington Model 81 .30 remington question

Post by booyah »

I recently inherited a remington model 81 in .30 remington from my father. I was also recently told that these could be convereted into .300 savage or .35 remington.

Is there any truth to that? I would love to shoot this rifle regularly, as I love the action and appearance of it, but as ammo in .30 remington is hard to come by, I would hate to waste it.

I know reloading is an option, but thats a large investment as well for me as far as money space and time and I dont want to look into it quite yet.

Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

The cost of conversion would probably be cost twice what the rifle is worth, if it can be done. Don't be intimidated by reloading either, you can get everything you need in a basic setup for about $50. Dies will cost you about $40 more. That is all way less than you would spend on the stuff needed to change the calibre.

You can go the other route too, watch the auction sites and .30 remingtoin shows up pretty regularly for about $20 per box. buffaloarms.com also sells loaded ammo for $31/box. reedsammo.com has 30rem for $11 and 12 (150grn and 170grn) bucks per box but I have no experience with them. That is a heck of a price though for 20 rounds. Ooooh, I need to order some of that.

It is not like this a gun you will want to take to the range and blast about 1200 rounds in an afternoon. Get an AK for that.

Update:

After some hunting around at a gun show I picked up 80 rounds for 80 dollars, and found 10 rounds of once fired brass from my dad making a total of 110 live rounds and 10 spent brass.

I also dropped by my local sporting goods store and checked out lee loaders for .30 remington.

Pretty sure thats going to be my way of going.

Thanks folks for the help

As far as a gun to drop a few hundred rounds through at the range, close, I have an SKS not the AK for that :-)
