Remington Model 14--Help Needed

Post by avery53 »

I have a slight problem, someone in the past has over tightened the take down screw, buggering up the threads.
I have a new screw, but the threads in the receiver, while they look fine, are apparantly pulled a bit. It needs a tap to clean them up.
The size is a strange one, 225x40. A very rare, probably Remington only size.
If anyone has one they would sell, rent, loan, would you please contact me.
I checked Wisners site, but apparantly they no longer carry them.
Thanks for any help

I actually responded to this when I received a direct email but thought I would pass on what course of action I suggested.

The folks at Wisner's, Jim Wisner is the one I have had the most contact with in that he/they used one of my Model 14-1/2 Cartridge Stops as a pattern for the ones they sell. I have used no less than six (6) of their 14-1/2 stops in various guns and they work to perfection, I actually need a few more and have asked Jim to make me up some.

That being said, their "take down screw" is a perfect match for the somewhat older Model 14 pattern and have used theirs as a replacement and it is the proper thread size. Their screw is made of some pretty damn hard steel and I have not only used them as a replacement but as a tap to recut the far softer steel in bushings that have been "messed up" for whatever reason.

You have two choices if you have stripped threads and that is to replace the bushing (which are VERY hard to find) and you will even encounter more fun attempting to remove the old one, then you get the pleasure of installing the replacement. My preference is to use a new Wisner take-down screw to recut the threads of the bushing coming in from the other side, about 80% of the time I can then use an original screw but would suggest you just use the Wisner replacement.

You may not agree but this is what I have found that works and pass it on for informational purposes.
