I'm not sure what it is, but I am almost positive it is not a Remington fore end. Remington's, even the short corncob tyre, aren't that rounded looking, and that's not Remington style impressed checkering..
What could have happened... did.

Looks like an Ithaca Model 37/87 forearm to me.
