Remington 58 Sportsmaster

Post by Tom O'Connell »

I inherited a Remington 58 Sportsmaster from my father. My son now uses it shoot trap. The gun I have has a fixed full choke barrel. Does anyone know if a modified choke barrel was made or a barrel that accepts screw in chokes, if so where could I buy them? Also does anyone know where I could get a shell catcher that would work on this gun?

58 barrel

According to the blue book, the 58 was made from '56 to '63 with "various chokes" available. I went to the Hastings site to look for a barrel and it's a no go for a new barrel. Not even a listing. Then went to Gun Parts Corp. also a no go with no listing for a used one. I think that leaves you with just a few options, two involving a gunsmith. Assuming there is enough "meat" at the barrel end, you could have a smith open your barrel to mod or have him install screw in chokes. I had my smith install screw in chokes from Brownells on my old mod. 11 for turkey hunting. You could look for another barrel at your local gun shows but you may be looking for a long time. By the way, the blue book calls the 58 a Sportsman not Sportsmaster.

Remington 870 Wingmaster Barrels are the best solution...

Post by dick_tracy1953 »

I'm sorry to reply so late, however, you can use any 870 Wingmaster Barrel on the 58 Sportsman. Gas ports can be drilled into the barrel ring to allow semi-automatic ejection.

I'd look for a vent ribbed barrel that takes choke tubes or locate a fixed vent ribbed "full choked" barrel. You can send the barrel to David Snoap aka The 58 Sportsman if your local smith can not do a proper conversion. David resides in Grand Rapids Michigan and has been selling discontinued used parts and repairing Remington shotguns for years. He also can properly convert 870 Wingmaster barrels for use on the 58's. I know of David because I test fire most of his repaired shotguns before they are return shipped.

David is a good guy for all repair. parts, and furniture for Remington shotguns, however, he is very limited on parts for Model 11's.
