Mod 700 Varminter
Dose any one know if any of the early 1st gen. fleur de lis checkered varmint guns were drilled for front sights ?? From what I read in Lacys book they did not come firnished with front sights but it dosen't say if they were drilled or not... It's a 6MM 323xxx serial range and I belive it was made in 1967 or 68 ... 54bullseye John

No sights, nor drilled for sights.
Re: Mod 700 Varminter
Are you saying yours is drilled for front sites? Rifles built into the mid '80s were drilled for target block towards the rear of the barrel where a rear site looks as if it might sit.

Yes it has 2 holes just like a regular barrel ... It also has the 2 holes near the reciever for the target blocks.. It's the only varmint special that I have and I have been reading Lacy's book but can't find if any of the early guns might have been factory drilled for front (maybe globe style) sights... I have seen some of the latter varmint 700s ribbon style and newer guns and know they are not drilled in for front sights... Let me know your thoughts.. John And thanks

Could very well be custom for exactly what you said-a globe type site. I saw a 40X with one once years ago.
