Dear DBL D:
I assume you are referring to Remington rolling block carbines. The answer is that inside contractors for E. Remington & Sons hand-stamped multi-digit numbers on every military and civilian rolling block rifle and pistol made from the mid-1860s through the mid-1880s. These are individually stamped. Frequently a smaller alphabetical letter preceeds the numbers.
