Remington 31 20g Skeet

Post by cm_tibbs »

Did Simmons put any vent ribs on M31 20g for Remington as they did for Winchester on M42's. The Blue Book say's solid rib standard on Skeet and I have a vent rib on my M31 20g Skeet. In very tiny script it says "simmons gun specialties" on the donut post rib. Thanks!

Model 31 Skeet Ribs

Post by Researcher »

My Remington Catalogues for 1938, 1939, 1942 and 1947, all show the Model 31 Skeet Gun as available with a plain barrel or a solid rib barrel in all three gauges, but the vent rib is only offered on the 12-gauge. My 1949 only offers the solid rib in all three gauges and the vent rib in 12-gauge. Seems likely your gun left Ilion with a plain barrel and got a rib from Simmons some time later.

The Simmons ribs used on Winchester Model 12s and 42s (Winchester Special Ventilated Rib) were not marked with the Simmons name when they came new that way. Simmons put their name on when they did the ribs after-market.

Thanks for the info, my 31 was made October of 1949 with a serial # of 577xxx. Maybe one of the last 31 20's?
