Received a 30-30 automatic from grandfather...Understand the ammo. is obsolete. the serial # is 25604 with an "F" printed by the serial# and a "k" in a circle also in the same area.
Would like to know its age and if it should be fired. Seems in clean good condition.

30-30 Auto

If you have a Remington Rifle that is automatic and it is marked 30-30 Remington, you have a model 8. Remington changed the 30-30 Rem marking to 30 Rem early on after legal action was taken by Winchester. By the way you posted your question on the shotgun part of the forum. You will get more information in the rifle forum. Happy hunting.

None of my reference books say anything about 30-30 marked model 8. This is very interesting! How many were made like this? Can you tell me more or point me to a place I can check this out? I checked on the Remington web page and it said nothing. I'm not to impressed with their web site so I'm not surprised when I didn't find anything there.
Thanks,
Dave

I hate to propigate this in the wrong forum, just a quick reply.
I too have a Model 8 Autoloader with Browning Patent references. It is marked 30-30 Rem. I believe this is in fact the obsolete 30 Rem round. I still find it but it is getting real hard to get. The brass is out there so if you load your own you are all set.
