rolling block rifle information needed

Post by smead »

I tried this yesterday but put it in the wrong section so I will try again.

I have 2 rifles I am trying to track down information on. Any help would be appreciated. Would like to know model, approx date, caliber?, value range.

Item 1 - rolling block action; Remington Arms Co, Ilion, N.Y. USA on barrel in front of rear sight; #J219341 on barrel; maybe 22 caliber; barrel octagon, 19 1/4" long; overall length 34 1/2" long; take down lever on R. side.

Item 2 - rolling block; possibly 32-20 caliber; Remington Arms Co, Ilion, N.Y. on barrel by rear sight; hooded front sight; Barrel 23 3/8" - round on muzzle half, octagon on recerver half; Nickel or silver tip on forestock; nickel or silver curved butt plate; engraving on hammer and action spur; # on bottom by last screw 3916; Patents on sideplate - May 3 1864, May 7, June 11, Nov 12, Dec 23, Dec 31 1872, Sept 1873

Thanks - hope someone can help

Rolling Blocks

Smead:

Item #1 - No. 4 rifle in 22 rf. The takedown you describe was made from 1900 to approximately 1926. It is the most coomon No. 4 with over 200,000 produced.

Item #2 - Sounds like a No. 2 rifle. It should be larger overall than your No. 4 and have a perch-belly stock (curved on the bottom). The half round/ half octagon configuration you describe is very unusual. To be more certain that the rifle was done this way at the factory, look underneath the barrel ahead of the fore-end. The caliber should be stamped there. Obviously this is not proof positive. The engraving you describe does not sound like factory work.

Value. CONDITION????? My recent personal highs and lows for No. 4s are $75 and $1,000. They varied from broken to in the original box. I sold a beater No. 2 for $220. If there was vivid case coloring on the receiver I'm sure $1,000 or more could be obtained. You need to know if the barrel configuration and engraving are factory work before setting a value on your No. 2. Photos would be a big help. Attach them to this post or send them direct to me if you wish at gydemate@aol.com.
