Engraved Model 12 receiver
Engraved Model 12 receiver
While working in an attic not far from the Ilion, NY plant I found what I am sure is a Remington Model 12 receiver. It is fully engraved, has a scene with two rabbits on the left side, a squirrel on the right, and a dog's head on top. The entire receiver and trigger guard is covered with different patterns of engravings. It is very beautiful and obviously hand done. The receiver and trigger guard have matching serial number 1272XX also done in a scrolled font on the underside of the receiver. This receiver appears to have never been used, there are no assembly or disassembly markings. The only parts attached are a screw and flat metal spring attached at the rear. Blueing and finish are nearly 100% there are a couple of small blemishes, not easily scene. Can anyone give any information on this? Would it be feasible to build an entire rifle from this or should I hold it as is for collector value. I would be glad to email pictures or post them when I figure out how.
M/12 receiver
Alan:
From your description you probably have an "E" or "F" grade M/12 receiver made in 1912. It would be difficult to complete the rifle and make it appear as original. Finding a proper era barrel would be the first challenge. There should be some engraving on the barrel. There is high-grade wood available, but Remington wood for the high-grade rifles had a distinctive appearance back then. If you found something similar, it would then need to be fitted and finished. Most of the high-grade M/12s had pistol grip caps.
My advise would be to keep it as you found it. It is certainly collectable as-is.
