I have an 28 gauge 1893 Number 3 shotgun S/N 87442 . Can you tell me the year of mfg.? Total number of 28 gauges made and or % of total number. Was the receiver case hardened or blued? And approx current value. the gun has approx 80% blue on barrel (some small spots of rust)with an browned receiver. the bore is like new. Wood and finish is good with no cracks.
REMINGTON ARMS sent me to this site they stated the Society may have more infomation then therself. I am not a collector but I like 28 gauge and could not pass this gun up. It should make a nice brush rabbit gun. I have been useing a 1100 28 gauge for years.
Thanks for any and all help.
I believe you have a NO.9 shotgun rather than a NO 3. My records indicate the only made the 28 Ga. in the NO. 9. The NO.9 was an improvement over the 3 in that it had a push button release for the fore-end rather than a screw. It also had an Auto Ejector where the 3 had an extractor. The frames were case hardened. I don't have a record of how many 28's were made nor quantities of total produced in both models. They also made them in a 24Ga. and both are rare. The gun that I have is in the s/n range listed by Remington as a No.3, It does have the push putton fore end and extractor not ejector. remington lists the no. 9 starting at s\n 90,000 Mine is s/n 87442. Remington does list the no. 3 in 28 gauge on there Firearm History page.
Thanks for your help.
You have my my inquisitive nature working overtime O.K. What
is the source of the serial number ranges you refer too? What
book are you referring to when you say " Remington does list
the no 3 in 28 gauge oh their" FIREARMS HISTORY PAGE"? I would
appreciate this info and I will be able to broaden my research
knowledge. Thanks Jay
You are correct in that your gun is an 1893. I was looking at
my guns on the wall and I had them in the wrong identified
position. I went thru my original catalogs of the era and
found as follows: The 1893 model was introduced in 1893 in
12ga. only. In 1894 they added 16 & 20 ga. In 1898 the added
10,24 & 28 ga. and continued these gages until they phased into
the Model 9. They definitely were case colored. The Blue Book
of gun values shows 100% $325, 95% $260, 80% $200, 60% $140.
for 12 ga. and only refers to 12. I would say the 28ga. should
add about a 50 to 75% premium to the price. 28ga is rare and I
have only heard of or seen 3 or 4 in my years of study of
Remington. Thanks for setting me off in the right
direction. My files from Remington factory do not break down
the number of guns made in each gauge. Regards Jay
Jay Thanks!! The Remington info I have is from the Remington web site http://www.remington.com - Go to "Library then History " that is where I found the s/n range for the model 3 and 9.
Thanks Oscar, I never knew that existed. My records are all from copies of records I copied while on research trips at the factory. I never saw this record. Jay
Hello, I could use a little help. About 30 years ago I bought a Ryder #3 at a gun show and at the time I thought I was buying a 28 gauge but when I got home it turned out to be a 24 gauge. The serial number is 32103. It's a non ejector gun with 30 inch barrels. The wood is in real good shape and I believe it is the original finish. It has a semi-pistol grip, kind of like the round knob on a Browning. The receiver has a nice patina on the left side and the right side retains about 80% of it's original finish. It has the original Remington hard rubber butt plate. I would be interested in any additional information anyone can supply. My email address is dvincc@msn.com
Thanks and be safe, Dave
