Model 1888 or Pre 1890 model

I have a so called model 1888. It has the pre 1888 barrel engravings and wooden grips.

Now I've heard, there possibly never was a 1888 model. They are early 1890 models, on which the factory used barrels and parts, which were produced pre 1888.

Is that true ?
