Depending on how it was lubricated in the past and stored, maybe it just needs to be cleaned and "de-gunked". Old oils and grease can solidify or get gummy over time and lead to what you've described.

I would DEFINITELY NOT try to adjust anything in it.

Not really. Soak the trigger mech. in a good gun solvent, or use a good brake or gun cleaner spray. Let it run into a bowl and watch for rusty colour flowing out. I'm sure you'll see something. Don't fool with the trigger at all.
