An odd Remington Model 12-C ???

Post by Greg T »

Hello! Just signed up for this forum. I have just completed re-building a Remington Model 12-C with new internal parts. It is now off to be relined as the bore is totally shot out. Here's what I have: Remington production code is RW. Serial number is below 400,000, in the 363xxx area as I recall (I am typing this from my high school classroom and thus my rifle is not here...). The rifle has a 24" octagon barrel with the two magazine barrel bands. It has a STRAIGHT-GRIP (not pistol grip) buttstock with a steel crescent buttplate. From what I can tell in the reading I have done, this rifle is supposed to have a pistol grip stock with the 24" octagon barrel. Do I have an odd one? I intend to use this rifle as it is in very nice conditon externally but just was not cleaned very well in the era of corrosive ammunition. I am also looking for the Lyman No.1 12R tang sight. I certainly will appreciate any help with this!

Greg:
Your Model 12-C was made in 1915 or 1916 judging by the serial #. The RW stands for Remington Works and is on (I believe) all Model 12s. The majority of the production of the 12-C had the semi-pistol grips stock, but straight grips are not that uncommon. The serial #s on my straight grip 12-Cs go from #180,000 to #397,000.

John Gyde: Thank you for your reply. The serial number of my rifle is #338036. I now know that the month and year code is on the side of the barrel but the rifle is now at the reliner's. Could you give me an exact month and year based on this number? Thank's again!

Greg:

Nope... Barrel codes that showed the month & year of production did not start until 1921.

But...Remington records show that the beginning serial #s were 294,526 in 1914 & 346,127 in 1915. To have some fun, I used simple math... If Remington produced the same # (307.8) of guns each day in 1914 that would mean your gun was made on the afternoon of October 26, 1914. Of course that disregards weekends, holidays & leap year calculations. It also disregards the fact that the serial #s in older Remington records were often estimates.

I checked and I have a 12-C straight stock less than 400 #s before yours. Probably made the morning of October 25???

Have fun with your Remington 22.

P.S. Roy Marcot & I will have a book published this year on Remington 22 rifles.

I have a 12-C with a serial number in the 635XXX range. No date code letters, so I know it was before 1921. I would appreciate it if you could get any closer to the date of mfg for me.

Model 12 date

Your M/12 in the 635XXX range was made near the end of 1924. The date code with the last letter "R" should be on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. A "P" or "S" means add or subtract a year. The records are estimates, not exact.

John - your info has been very helpful - please endure one more request - my 12-C serial number is 557xxx - I believe based on your calculations that the date of manufacture would be in 1922 - correct?

Nope... 1920.

1919 production ended at # 487,227. 1920 production ended at 572,736.
The 1920 production of 85,509 Model 12s was the highest number made in any one year.
