40-50 sharps
40-50 sharps
Is there any way to tell by just looking at the chamber if it's a straight or bottle neck? The barrel is just marked 40 50. Thanks for your help.

Yep, you should see the shadow of the shoulder when viewed from the breech.
Re: 40-50 sharps
Ok, Thanks for the reply. I'll take a look for that shoulder. Is it somthing I could feel if I ran a stick in the chamber? Do you know if the bottle neck 40-50 was a common chambering on a number one sporter?

Diameter at the breach should be considerably larger than ~.40 is another way. I don't know but I'd say it was uncommon but not rare. Seen more in the #3 rifles I think.

I didn't even think of that. I guess I have a 40-50 bn. Thanks for the help.

A chamber cast is always advised. It may be stamped one thing but altered somewhere down the line.

What do you use to plug the barrel?

Order you some Cerrosafe from Brownells or Midway and go by the directions. There are some how to posted on YouTube as well. A paper towel or rag works fine.
Re: 40-50 sharps
If you simply want to know wether it is straight or bottleneck, simply make a wad of rag or paper toweling and push it through with a rod. You should feel a bottleneck.

Hello, cfreeman. I have a No.1 sporter 30" full oct. Rough&Ready rear, small globe front, checkered pistol grip, plain forend with steel forend cap in .40-50. This little gun is very accurate with a 260gr. NEI cast & AA5744. Cases can be purchased from Buffalo Arms Co.

You can make a quick and dirty chamber cast with wax. Doesn't hold up well, but is good for a quick check of what you have there.
