CAXXX marked cartridge conversions

Post by BrotherRockeye »

Having trouble finding any info on the CAxxx stamped Remington cartridge conversions.
I have read it called a "unit" marking but that is all I can find.
Does anyone know for certain what the CAxxx stamp is about?
Mine is a NMA with a 5 shot cylinder complete with a factory ejector assembly in what I believe to be 44Remington or 44 wcf, judging by the cylinder size and bore.
It was supposed to have been originally converted to .46 rimfire then to .44Colt according to the vendor, but the bore suggests a smaller diameter bullet.

any information regarding the implications of the CAxxx marking would be much appreciated.

Obliged.

From everything I've read and folks I've talked to, nobody knows for certain what the CA mark means. The factory conversions were all in .46 with a 5 shot cylinder. The best source I know of for info on the Remington conversions is Roger Phillips book "Remington Large-Bore Conversion Revolvers".
With that 5 shot cylinder I'd be surprised if your gun was anything other than a .46.

Thanks for the reply.
my revolver is centerfire, having had the hammer reworked long ago.
Wasn't it only the first conversions done under the Rollin White patent that were in .46 rimfire, and the later conversions in several other calibers, including 44Rem and 44-40?
If one can believe the fella I bought it from,it was originally converted to .46rimfire,then later to a 44 centerfire...he claimed 44Colt...I'm skeptical.
I still have to slug it to know for sure but a cast .427 will start in the muzzle and a cast .430 won't.
